William Blackwell, Geometric Paintings
(posted 1-16-07)

Our latest exhibit features the work of architect, urban planner & long-time IOF member, William Blackwell.

Bill’s artwork looks abstract, but each piece represents an illustration of a geometric relationship.  His work uses simple shapes like squares, circles & triangles, as well as more complex shapes like parabolas, ellipses & spirals.  Each shape is crafted from particleboard & acrylic paint.  Shapes are then layered with other shapes in mathematical relationships, creating surfaces with some depth.

Bill uses clear, bold colors purposefully & somewhat intuitively to bring clarity and harmony to each piece. Primary colors, as opposed to earthy colors, are used to emphasize the difference between the natural & the man-made world.
