Personal Training
Inside Outside Fitness offers personal training services to individuals, pairs of friends or small groups. All of our trainers are well-qualified & experienced. They can develop safe & effective exercise routines to help you meet your personal fitness goals. A single session with a personal trainer can jump-start or enhance your fitness routine. Ongoing training sessions can keep you motivated and enhance your progress!

Shane is a fun, high-energy personal trainer here at IOF. Shane began teaching fitness classes in 1991 while taking numerous dance classes and studying at the University of Oregon. After graduation, Shane continued her dance training at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in New York. She returned to the west coast in 1996 and continued her fitness career in California. Throughout her dance and fitness career, Shane has been a member of the Briggs Contemporary Dance Company and Newstyle Motherlode Dance Company. She is fluent in many movement & class formats, such as step, body conditioning, abs and back, circuit training, hip hop and her current favorite, kickboxing. She is a certified personal trainer and kickboxing instructor.

Steve is a San Francisco native who graduated from University of San Francisco with a Business-Finance degree. He has a simple philosophy, “I use a simple, straight forward approach based on "quality of life." Educate the client not only on what we are doing, but why we are doing it. The details of each and every movement will be demonstrated and explained as many times as necessary. With that we can establish a physical base of strength and balance. With such a base one can move into most any sport specific activity desired.” He has his Fitness Instructor Certification (AFAA, 1993), Personal Fitness Trainer Certification (AFAA, 1994) and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA, 1997).

Sylvia Burboeck -

Sylvia is our much-loved, weekday morning yoga instructor. Her yoga class follows an Ashtanga Vinyasa flowing style, and is accessible for all levels of yoga student. Sylvia, like Rudy, is also a talented actor on the local stage. She has a B.A. in Acting from Tulane University and has studied Shakespeare at the Royal Academy in London. She has performed with the California Conservatory Theatre, the Bus Barn Stage Company, and ParaTheatrical ReSearch.

Kirby works with those who take fitness seriously, from elite athletes like professional basketball players, to high school & college teams that need a fitness boost, and to weekend athletes who want to push themselves further than they can get on their own. His boot-camp style workouts include cardiovascular, agility & functional strength drills like running steps and throwing weighted balls around. If you want to take your fitness to its highest level, Kirby is the trainer for you!

BZ is a personal trainer and instructor at IOF. She has extensive training and experience in dance, pilates and running. BZ’s dance training began with ballet at the age of four and continued with modern dance through high school and at Bennington College. She began teaching group fitness and dance in 1984. A natural athlete, she spent six years competing in Triathlons throughout the country and over 30 years (and counting) competing as a runner. She started teaching at Inside Outside Fitness in 2001, and is currently SCW certified in Mat Pilates, Personal Training, and AEA certified in Aquatic Fitness. As a personal trainer, she communicates well, and taps into all her areas of expertise to motivate her clients, and give them a stronger sense of body awareness as they become more fit.

Mark is a personal trainer & a very versatile instructor of step, spinning & circuit classes at IOF. He has had a successful personal training business specializing in weight loss, exercise support & rehabilitative exercise programs since 1984. He attended UC Davis and earned a degree in education. He is a California State University Certified Group Fitness Instructor with knowledge of anatomy, physiology, kinesiology & psychology, and received special recognition when earning his American Council on Exercise's Personal Trainer Certification. With a background in yoga, Pilates, and acupressure, Cathyn offers a balanced perspective to her fitness teaching. She encourages safe, functional, and FUN training to build power and flexibility. She completed her 200-hour yoga teaching program with YogaFit (Beth Shaw) and is currently pursuing the 500-hour program. She is certified as a personal trainer through the American Council of Exercise and holds a Masters in Public Health from UC Berkeley. Cathyn also teaches circuit, Pilates mat and Pilates circuit, indoor cycling, vinyasa yoga, aqua fitness, and arthritis aquatic therapy. Ilene didn't begin a career in fitness until the age of 47, but has been active all her life. She admits that she still owns a set of Jane Fonda workout tapes! Ilene is a certified personal trainer with the National Academy of Sports Medicine, as well as a Mat Level 1 Pilates instructor. She has also earned continuing education credits in the area of exercise programs for the prevention of osteoporosis. She believes that our bodies & minds are all very different & deserve to be treated with personal attention & respect. Ilene develops individualized fitness programs for each of her clients, based on their personal fitness level, needs & goals. She incorporates aspects of cardiovascular activity, core work, strength training, flexibility & balance into every program. Her philosophy - any fitness level is a great place to start!

Patrick specializes in helping clients with injuries move from rehabilitation back to normal exercise. He works to not only bring back the injured area, but to stabilize other areas of the body that have been compensating for that injury. Through massage, stretching and specialized exercises, he can help return you to confident functionality and enjoyment of your favorite exercise.

Sarah Jenness, RYT, CPT, is an Integral Hatha Registered Yoga Teacher, a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, and a 2007 graduate of the Piedmont Yoga Advanced Studies Program. She is also completing Anodea Judith's (Sacred Centers) Chakra Yoga teacher certification. With a lifelong background in dance, Sarah began strength training and practicing yoga to heal from and avoid injuries. She is committed to sharing this with clients at all levels of ability, encouraging a deeper awareness and appreciation for the body and for the Self. Sarah has developed a unique approach to fitness training by incorporating the mindfulness of Yoga into strength and core training. She also specializes in strength and flexibility training to support a yoga asana practice.

Heather Meyer, M.A., is a passionate fitness expert who believes in the power of transformation through movement. As an instructor, Heather is loved for her energy, inspiration, and positivity. She can get you to smile and sing while you sweat during her intense dance cardio and strength workouts. Heather has danced her way through life, starting with her own choreography to her first cassette tape, Flashdance. After years of training in ballet, she studied dance at the University of Oregon and was a member of the Briggs Modern Dance Company and the Oregon Ethnic Dance Theater. Upon moving to Oakland, Heather studied Tae Kwon Do and Kickboxing, giving her a new way of movement and release. In a continual quest for taking her knowledge to deeper levels, she became a certified AFPA Personal Trainer and Zumba instructor, and is currently learning the art of Shiatsu massage. Heather enjoys bringing a sense of fun and passion to all of her fitness endeavors as well as life! When she is not dancing, she can be found teaching first grade students how to read, crafting a poem, and cooking in her kitchen while composing choreography. She is looking forward to sharing her passion with you while helping you Create Your Own Beautiful!

Rocky Suzanne Patten is a Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Empowerment Coach, and a Certified Massage Practitioner. In the spirit of mind-body connection, Rocky has been a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer for the past 13 years. She has worked with people from the ages of 12 – 81. She specializes in body sculpting, strength training, and weight loss. In addition to her wide range of diverse experience in fitness, she also performed in the Yoga Dance Troupe “Yoga Motion” in Santa Cruz, and attended the Circus School in San Francisco. Rocky holds NASM, IFPA, and AFAA credentials for personal training. Rocky also graduated from USM (The University of Santa Monica) specializing in spiritual psychology. She also teaches outdoor Boot Camp classes in the East Bay. As well, Rocky teaches inspirational workshops such as, "How to Unleash the Super-Hero Within!" and Creating Vision Boards using the “Law of Attraction”, helping others find their life purpose. Angelique has been a certified fitness instructor for more than 5 years, and teaches Zumba and Boot Camp classes at IOF. She was the first Zumba-certified instructor in the Oakland area, and holds Zumba Level 2, Zumba Gold and Zumba Toning certifications. She is also a certified Personal Trainer. Originally from Cincinnati, she has lived in the Bay Area for the past 10 years. She’s married to Scott and has two boys, Zachary and Jackson.

Jim has been a weight trainer and weightlifter since 1960, and is a weightlifting coach extroadinaire! He graduated from San Francisco State University in 1968 with a BA in Physical Education, and has been a gym owner and personal trainer ever since. He has coached ten Olympians, including Mario Martinez, the silver medalist in the 1984 Olympics. He was the USA Olympic Team Weightlifting Coach in 1980, 1988 and 1992, and the president of USA Weightlifting from 1992 to 1996. He is an author (Olympic Style Weightlifting for Beginner and Intermediate Weightlifters), writer and reporter for MILO Magazine. He's also an instructor for USA Weightlifting's Sports Performance and Club Coach Certification Courses, and a certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. A recent import to the Bay Area, Sean hails from New York City. He has earned three certifications in the health & fitness area: in personal training, fitness & nutrition, & advanced sports nutrition. His fitness specialties include old school calisthenics, core strengthening, and improving balance. He teaches absolutely killer abdominal & full-body workouts!
